There are two general approaches in healing a bodily illness: a) to heal the particular organ or faculty that is defective, sick or weak; b) to strengthen the healthy organs and faculties so that they may overcome and heal those not well. The parallel in illnesses of the soul are the two approaches in service of G-d Teshuva (repentance) and good deeds.
It is better to have one bird in a cage than a hundred in the air.
If you don't run so far, the way back will be shorter.
A person should always consider himself to be half wicked and half righteous. If he did one mitzvah, praiseworthy is he, for he tipped himself toward the side of righteousness. If he sinned, woe is to him, for he tipped himself toward the side of guilt.
